About Massage #01

What is Sports and Remedial Massage?

Sports and remedial massage therapy combines general and deep tissue manipulation with various forms of stretching techniques to loosen up tight muscles, break up adhesions in muscle fibres, and restore and/or maintain the full functionality of your muscles. The treatment is direct and results are experienced quite quickly. It is a very safe, non invasive therapy.

Massage can stimulate the muscular and nervous systems and improve the blood circulation and lymphatic flow. This allows fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients to repair the body tissues whilst eliminating metabolic waste products and toxins from the body. The result of this process allows the body to finction more efficiently and helps counteract the debilitating effects of stressful modern-day living.

Sports and Remedial Massage differs from other forms of massage as it is a deeper form of massage and covers the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body. Many people appreciate the deep treatment offered by a sports massage therapist as they can really feel those knots being "ironed out". Following the treatment, the sports massage therapist will offer guidance on improving posture and core stability to re-balance the body along with exercises and stretching techniques where appropriate.

The treatment of sports injuries is the area most people naturally associate with remedial massage but it is also used very successfully in the treatment of a broad range of conditions. These include post operative trauma, arthritis, non sporting injuries where a muscle based problem can cause pain. For example, bad posture can cause neck and shoulder tension which can lead to headaches. Massage together with postural advice can help alieviate these conditions.
